EV charging stations

Find out how the BESS technology can supply your charging stations with sufficient power and how you can benefit from attractive subsidies such as SPRILA and SPULA.

Sustainable and reliable EV charging with a Battery Energy Storage System

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) provides the solution for companies that want to develop an EV charging stations but are facing power shortages. A BESS allows companies to develop reliable and efficient EV charging stations. This can be achieved regardless of the limitations of the current power grid, while promoting cost savings and sustainability. With a Battery Energy Storage System, the existing connection can be optimised through peak-shaving. The systems store energy that can be used at a later time, allowing companies to optimise their charging infrastructure and make it more resilient.

The solution to an insufficient grid connection

As the demand for electric vehicles (EV'S) continues to grow, so does the need for reliable and efficient charging infrastructure. However, many companies wanting to develop EV charging plazas face challenges such as a too small of a grid connection, limited grid capacity and high costs for grid reinforcement. This can lead to power shortages during peak hours, negatively affecting the reliability and usability of charging plazas.

An Energy Storage System offers a solution to this challenge. The battery stores energy during periods of low demand or when there is a surplus of renewable energy available. It then delivers this energy back to the grid or directly to the charging stations during peak hours. This ensures that there is always enough power available, regardless of the load on the grid.

Benefits of Energy Storage for EV charging stations

Investing in a Battery Energy Storage System for an EV charging plaza offers several advantages. There is less reliance on costly grid reinforcements, because the BESS solution can accommodate peaks in demand. When grid connection expansion is not possible, a battery can be used to expand charging capacity without major infrastructure modifications. Moreover, the system can contribute to lower energy costs by using energy at times when the price is low and storing it for use during peak hours when the price is higher. Furthermore, the use of a BESS contributes to the sustainability of your business by allowing optimal use of renewable energy sources

SPRILA and SPULA Subsidy Scheme

The Netherlands is aiming for emission-free transport by 2050, where many vehicles will be electric. To accelerate the switch to electric transport, a good charging network is essential. Several funding arrangements are available, including SPRILA and SPULA, which support companies in the transition to renewable energy and the expansion of charging infrastructure.

SPRILA (Private Charging Infrastructure at Businesses Subsidy Scheme)

This subsidy scheme is aimed at Dutch entrepreneurs and public transport concessionaires. Entrepreneurs can apply for subsidies for the costs of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles on their own or rented premises, as long as it is not always publicly accessible. Subsidisation is available up to 350 kW for entrepreneurs and from 600 kW for public transport concessionaires. In addition, both groups can apply for a subsidy for an Energy Storage System with specific power and capacity conditions.

SPULA (Public Charging Infrastructure Heavy Transport Subsidy Scheme)

The subsidy is for the construction or expansion of charging infrastructure for heavy electric vehicles in locations that are always publicly accessible. The infrastructure must meet specific requirements, including a grid connection of at least 600 kVA, charging stations of at least 200 kW and at least 2 charging stations of 350 kW or more. Also required are foundations suitable for vehicles of at least 50 tonnes, clearance heights of at least 4.2 metres, and physical spaces for large vehicles. If there is insufficient grid capacity, an extra subsidy can be applied for an Energy Storage System.

Your partner in Energy Storage

At ELINEX Power Solutions, the possibilities of a Battery Energy Storage System are well known. By conducting a simulation with Tibo Energy's AI software, ELINEX can advise on which BESS setup offers the best Return on Investment (ROI) for you, depending on your energy goals and ambitions. ELINEX's experts are ready to offer guidance at every step of the process, from design to installation of the BESS systems. Moreover, ELINEX can install the BESS systems at your site, perform maintenance and link them to an Energy Management System (EMS) to optimise the performance of your systems. With our extensive knowledge and experience, we ensure that your EV charging plaza is future-proof.
