What is a Stage V Generator?

A Stage V generator is a type of internal combustion engine that meets European emission standards for mobile equipment, known as Stage V. These standards are set to drastically reduce emissions of harmful substances such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM). Stage V generators use advanced technologies such as diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to minimise these emissions. The generator is also less polluting by using AdBlue. This is a mixture of distilled water and urea (a synthetic product from ammonia). As the AdBlue is sprayed into the hot exhaust gases and a chemical reaction converts the nitrogen into harmless water vapour and nitrogen. This makes these generators an excellent choice for companies looking to meet the most stringent environmental requirements while ensuring operational reliability.

Stage V Generator in Combination with a BESS

Combining a Stage V generator with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) offers several advantages in terms of efficiency and sustainability. In this hybrid solution, the generator is mainly used during peak loads or when battery capacity is insufficient. For example, when solar panels do not generate enough energy or your grid connection is too small for your peak load. Pairing the generator with a Battery Storage System significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, while ensuring the reliability of your energy supply. In addition, the BESS can store energy during periods of low demand, reducing the need to run the generator, leading to further cost savings and reduced wear and tear.

By law, an emergency power generator may run for a maximum of 500 hours per year and be used only in emergency situations, where hourly records are mandatory. When a generator is used for applications such as peak-shaving or daily power supply, even below 500 hours per year, it is considered a regularly running generator. This requires a four-yearly emissions inspection. A Stage V generator meets strict emission standards and can be used for both occasional and continuous operation.

When forming a microgrid, a Stage V generator plays a crucial role. In combination with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), energy generated by running generator or using (renewable) energy sources can be stored. This enables load balancing, energy storage for peak hours and power supply when renewable energy sources are not available. In doing so, the Stage V generator acts as a clean and efficient back-up, supporting the BESS by assisting in times of high demand or low generation, while complying with stringent emission standards. In this way, the combination of a BESS and a Stage V generator contributes to a reliable, flexible and environmentally friendly microgrid.
